Updox Direct Messaging Platform Used in First Complete Certification for Stage 2 of Meaningful Use

Greenway Medical Technologies relies on Updox’s Direct Messaging HISP for three ONC 2014 criteria

02/20/2013 – (Dublin, Ohio) Updox, the most rapidly adopted Practice Communications Management (PCM) system in the industry, today announced the Updox NHIN Direct Messaging platform was used by Greenway Medical Technologies during its successful complete certification of PrimeSUITE 2014 (17.0) against the ONC 2014 Edition criteria.

The Updox platform uses the national standards established by the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology’s (ONC) Direct Project and operates as a Health Information Service Provider (HISP). The Updox HISP helps electronic health record (EHR) providers meet the Direct messaging requirements that are a part of the following criteria:

  • 170.314(b)(1) – Transitions of care – receive, display and incorporate transition of care / referral summaries
  • 170.314(b)(2) – Transitions of care – create and transmit transition of care / referral summaries
  • 170.314(e)(1) – View, download, and transmit to 3rd party

“We chose to partner with Updox due to their extensive experience with Direct, and we were very pleased with their support during the certification testing process,” said Johnathan Samples, executive vice president, research and development, Greenway®. “Our tight integration with the Updox service allows a PrimeSUITE user to easily and seamlessly send or receive a Direct message.”

Updox offers two options for EHR providers looking to partner with a HISP for certification. The first option allows EHRs to quickly integrate by creating a single sign on between their application and Updox, in which users simply launch a customized version of the Updox interface to send messages. A second option allows the EHR to control the user experience and engage the Updox Direct infrastructure through application programming interfaces (APIs). In addition, Updox offers an optional patient portal to assist with the Secure Messaging 170.314(e)(3) criteria.

“Our goal is to offer EHR providers choices that make it easy for them to add Direct into their offerings and in a way that meets their certification timeline,” said Sean Ramsey, president, Updox. “Other HISP providers only provide tools and require a major upfront investment. With Updox, EHR providers can be assured they will have flexibility, a complete solution and support throughout the entire testing process.”

About Updox
The Updox Practice Communications Management (PCM) system enables medical practices to improve internal workflows by having a single interface to manage all patient and provider communications. Updox allows patients to interact with a practice via the web to schedule appointments, complete forms, make payments, securely message the doctor’s office and access their medical history, including lab results and continuity of care documents. In addition, through the same workflow a practice can communicate with other providers to exchange documents such as referrals and lab results via electronic fax or NHIN Direct secure messaging. When a practice wants to exchange information, they can easily edit, sign and send a document, and then file a copy in the EHR.

The Updox PCM can be used by large hospital systems, health information exchanges (HIEs) and Regional Extension Centers (RECs) to create solutions such as personal health records for HIEs, lab result delivery networks, ad hoc electronic physician order entry systems and private labeled NHIN Direct secure messaging services. EHR and Practice Management vendors can also partner with Updox to use the PCM to provide Direct secure messaging and portal functions to meet Stage 2 Meaningful Use requirements.

More than 2,500 practices, representing 6 million patients, are using Updox every day to Transform Practice Communications and the Patient Experience.
